November 2008

Dear Classmates,

I hope this newsletter finds each of you well in these most tumultuous of times - stock market plunge, home and bank foreclosures, fighting wars in 2 countries and a fiercely fought presidential campaign. It makes us stop and count our blessings. This is a significant year coming up. Most of us will turn 60! In fact some of us have already reached this plateau. So Happy Birthday to one and all!!! There was a time when I thought 60 was old. Not any longer.

I am happy to report that the Class of 1988 is in the process of establishing a scholarship for their class. This is the first class outside of our class to do so. We have been contacting those classes that would be having their class reunions. Like the classes of '68 and '69 - 40th, classes '73 and '74 - 35th, etc. A lot of seeds have been planted. I'm hoping as more classes join us the momentum will pick up. When you have an opportunity, tell other Central alumni (these could be your brothers and sisters) what we are doing. Help spread the word.

We have now awarded $4,750 in scholarships over the past 6 years ($300 in 2003, $500 in 2004, $700 in 2005, $1,000 in 2006, $1,250 in 2007 and $1,000 in 2008). When you think about it that is quite an accomplishment. Thank you. Thank you.
The Guidance Committee at Central selected Amanda Graham to receive our scholarship this past year. Amanda is attending Liberty University. She plans to major in elementary Education and hopes to come back and teach in Lunenburg County some day. Our scholarship this year was given in memory of Cynthia Whittaker Crafton, wife of classmate Bobby Crafton. Bobby attended the Awards Day at Central and had the opportunity to meet with Amanda. He was impressed. This coming year we will remember Andrew Sluiter followed by Harold Tisdale next time.

Our investment in the Windsor mutual fund with Vanguard as with most stocks has taken a beating. Our net investment of $8,578 now has a value of $5,489 a drop of 36%. Hopefully it will work it's way back up. It is time for our annual campaign drive for our scholarship fund. Send checks to Gene Hart at 2570 Sandy Lane, Victoria, VA 23974. Make checks out to C of L Alumni Scholarship Foundation. Put for the Class of 1967 scholarship. If you haven't given in the past, please consider this year. We would like to increase our participation. It doesn't have to be much. $5, $10 or more is fine. Give out of the appreciation to the teachers that help shaped you. Please mail contributions by December 1st. Thank you. Thank you. The family of Michael O'Brien has made a donation to the Foundation in his memory.

Please check out our web site. When you Google Central of Lunenburg, click on the Alumni Scholarship Foundation site. Check out the reunion pictures, foundation sign, Class of '67 plaque and a lot of other stuff. As a reminder our board of directors are Nancy Snead Chappell, Gene Hart, David Arthur, Margaret Wright Hornbeck and Al Vaughan. In closing... Happy Birthday to each and everyone!!! Warm wishes.

May God continue to bless,

Al Vaughan
