Dear Classmates,

I hope this newsletter finds each of you in good health and great spirits. We recently evacuated to Atlanta due to Hurricane Matthew. The eye made landfall 30 miles north of Charleston!  We were fortunate that winds had dropped to a category 2.  We had some debris to clean up but no damage to our house. All hurricanes that come our way are measured against Hurricane Hazel (category 4) that came through Lunenburg County Oct 15, 1954!

I would like to recognize our 2015 scholarship recipient, Jessica Bailey.  Jessica is going to VA Tech and is majoring in Agriculture – Crop and Soil Science. Our scholarship was given in honor of Anne Hamlett.  The class of ’89 awarded 2 -  $1,000 scholarships – Yolanda Bell and Treynisha Ghee. The class of ’88 did not award a scholarship this past year.   Our Foundation has now awarded over $28,000 in scholarships!

We held our 4th annual 5K Race at Central on April 23rd 2016.  Please check out pictures on our web site https://centraloflunenburg.tripod.com/Central5K2016/CHS2016race.htm

While we have great sponsorship and help from many folks, the participation is dropping off. We have cleared almost $2,000 each of the past 2 years. This year we want to concentrate on our upcoming 50th class reunion! So we will not have the race in 2017.  We will reconsider for 2018.

Our 50th class reunion is set for Saturday June 10, 2017! We graduated on this date 50 ages ago! Nancy and Chippie have agreed to host. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending.  We are in the planning phase now.  You are encouraged to send Woody Wright Hornbeck any suggestions you may have at woody.hornbeck@gmail.com.  Please touch base with your classmates and encourage them to come!

It is not too late to send Central a 50th birthday card. They are posting all the cards on a bulletin board in the cafeteria for the students to see and read.

Treasurer report from Gene Hart: As of 10-28-16 we have $9,847 in our checking account and our Vanguard Windsor fund was valued at $15,497.  Our long term goal is to reach $100,000 and to establish our endowment. The class of ‘88 has a balance of $164 and the class of ‘89 has a balance of $4,727.

Our fall campaign drive is to raise $2,000 by December 9th. Thank you for your participation and support. Send checks to Gene Hart at 2570 Sandy Lane, Victoria, VA  23974.  Make checks payable to C of L Alumni Scholarship Foundation.  Put for the class ’67 scholarship. Venassia Gόnter continues to spear head the class of ‘89 efforts while Scott Wingfield has been the contact for the class of ‘88. We continue to get questions from other classes about joining the Foundation.

Warm wishes for the holiday season ahead and for the coming year.  See you at our 50th class reunion!
